Let's get uncomfortable, In 100AD a Roman poet wrote... "“Two things only the people anxiously desire—bread and circuses.” This was originally written to explain basic human nature. As long as people have basic needs of food and entertainment, they can be controlled. They don't question politics or policy. "Don't fix what isn't broken." We are and have become slaves of stimulation. We are okay to unconsciously consent to be programmed by stimulation rather than our own agency. It's really a terrifying thing and the data isn't friendly about it either. Our modern world is in trouble, we are more anxious, listless and medicated than ever before. On average kids spend 7-10 hours on screens per day. Adults are worse with 8-11 hours on screens per day. What does this really do to us? Let's go down a rabbit hole of neurology and non-linear dynamic synchronization. Non-linear dynamics grants us a perspective that randomness and chaos are only illusions of the human mind and that EVERYTHING in the known universe has a generating pattern that is repeatable. However often times that pattern is so sensitive and requires so much comprehension to discover it that we never see it or even attempt to see or understand it. As such because so much effort is required we never program to understand itself by OUR OWN AGENCY. However, the brain is a meaning-making machine, and thus, we cannot turn off its capacity to generate meaning and patterns. So, if we are no longer doing it with our own agency because self-awareness is super uncomfortable by modern standards, we have to ask what it is. We are outsourcing it to stimulation and information we passively consume. We are unconsciously and passively being programmed to generate patterns within our own brains. The repetition and consistency of the pattern determine its strength. We no longer have synchronicity in our life by nature or other people because we aren't generating the patterns anymore. We are fighting against natural systems because we've been programmed to assume effort and suffer are wrong, out of alignment. We are being spiritually gas lit and high roaded to trusting everything BUT our sense of truth. How do we fix it?
Well if you made it this far you're already doing it. Reclaim your attention span because without it we will any semblance of self awareness that has power. Read, observe, think, feel. The truth is that if you don't realize that the suffering isn't a good thing and that it is actually for you, things won't change. We all it a point where we are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Why not govern your threshold for discomfort and lean into the inevitable change that we all crave? Stress is a part of life. Stress management isn't about managing stress so it goes away, it's managing stress so it's source of power for you. It shows you when you're out of alignment with your truth, when something is off. When it doesn't feel right, that doesn't mean you need to go nuclear and blow up everything. It means that it's time for responsibility and recalibration. For myself it means that something got into my system that doesn't belong there. Inauthentic thoughts, feelings and actions. Responsibility for your life has diminishing returns as well. Your feelings are valid and want to be witnessed. Shaming the shame has never healed the part of your that's ashamed. That said, it feels necessary to also express that we aren't responsible for others' actions, thoughts, or feelings. We can support them based on our agreements with them but that's a talk for another day. One of the biggest disservices I can provide you today is telling you how I've started to navitage that space. No one can do your work for you, including critical thinking. SLOW DOWN and take inventory in your life. Pen to paper or spend time in nature. Get clear on what is and isn't true, is and isn't working. I'll see you on the other side, the discomfort is for you.
