Why You’re Still Burnt Out — Even After You’ve “Tried Everything”

Everybody thinks that burnout is about doing too much, poor prioritization, or a lack of clarity.

But here’s the truth:

You’re likely not doing too much. You’re just doing the wrong things in the wrong state.


That distinction alone changes everything.


One of the primary behaviors I help my clients implement — and one of the most important things I teach — is a tool called transitional behaviors.


These are simple rituals that create clear boundaries between different parts of your life. And almost every high performer I work with struggles to install them — especially in the morning.


Think about it: most executives start their day helping with kids, running around, or checking Slack before brushing their teeth.

Your nervous system? Completely confused.

It doesn’t know whether to calm down, gear up, or stay in neutral.


And when your nervous system doesn’t know what state it’s in, your entire ability to prioritize crumbles — because the internal environment doesn’t match the external demands.

Here’s a quick system you can implement today:

Organize your life in three daily phases, each with a defined transition.

1. Morning Phase — Create Predictability


Don’t rush.

Give your mind something gentle: slow movement, light stimulation, boredom, or mindfulness.

Then introduce a signal for transition — something like brushing your teeth, doing your hair, or putting on clean clothes.

That act tells your system: “We’re shifting from home to work mode.”

2. Midday — Focused Execution


Once you’ve transitioned into work mode, your energy should flow naturally.

You’ve already cued your system for performance — now use it.

3. End-of-Day — Downshift


This is where most people fail.

You need a transition out of performance mode.

No Slack. No “one last email.”

Instead, do something that signals closure:

A walk, changing clothes, turning off notifications — anything that communicates “We’re done.”
